What is a Froize?

Originally a pair of game keeper's cottages, The Froize has been licensed since the 1970's - first as an ale house and now as a beautiful country restaurant.

The origin of the name - Froize is somewhat curious and doubtful. Tales of an old French savoury pancake made with even older bacon! known as a froise are true, but not very exciting or romantic!

Or, perhaps, a medieval Suffolk word for a friar - well, we are situated on Friar's Walk which extends from Butley priory and wends its way past our front door ending up via Sudbourne park, on Orford quay.

Or maybe it's just a "pselling mitsake" who knows! - It is, however, the only one!!

Nearly a decade since buying the Froize, Chef and owner, David Grimwood, has developed The Froize into one of Suffolk's leading freehouse restaurants with an enviable reputation for excellent and predominantly, locally sourced food.
